Have you ever tried cutting your hair at home? If you’re not careful, it can turn into a long drawn out experience that leaves your hair cut in an embarrassing and unflattering way. Does that mean that the only way to cut hair at home is to go to cosmetology school? Of course not, but there are a few steps you’ll want to take to learn how to cut your hair at home without losing your mind first.

The biggest thing to remember when you’re trying to cut your hair at home is that unless you actually have the training needed, the chances that your home haircut will be exactly what you want are slim. You can likely get very close, but even hairdressers often mess up when they’re working. If you’re wanting to cut your hair at home, it is a risk you must be aware of and willing to take.

Simple Styles are Best

For home haircuts, a simple cut is much better than a cut that requires a fair amount of skill to get right. In fact, when you’re cutting your hair at home, the simpler the style, the better. For women, this can be a simple bob or a pixie cut. For men, a short style or even buzz cut is simplest.

This isn’t to say that you can’t do complicated haircuts at home. They can successfully be done. However, if you’re just getting started with at home haircuts, it is best to start simply and work your way up to the more complicated styles.

Have the Proper Equipment

The last thing you want is to be trying to cut your hair at home with a dull pair of kitchen scissors. Since a good or bad haircut will affect your overall looks, you will want to make sure you have the proper equipment on hand. This can include proper hair cutting trimmers, hair cutting scissors and even a straight razor if you will be shaving necks and hair lines. They do not need to be super fancy, but they should be made for hair and sharp enough to do the job properly.

When you choose your hair clippers, you’ll want to make sure that you choose clippers that offer multiple blade guides. The different guides allow you to cut hair at different lengths. If you don’t have all the guides you need, you may ultimately end up with the wrong length.

For hair cutting scissors, make sure they are sharp enough to cut each strip of hair with a single cut.. If you have ever used dull scissors, you already know how they can chew at what they are cutting. This is not something you want to have happen when you’re working with your hair.

Find a Tutorial

If you have never cut hair at home, you will most definitely want to find some form of training. This does not have to be an expensive cosmetology course. It can be as simple as Youtube tutorials or even blog tutorials written by people in the know. The best option, especially if you’re new to this, is to search for a specific tutorial based on the cut you’re wanting to do instead of searching broadly.

After you find a tutorial you like, take the time to watch it several times. The more you watch it, the more familiar you will be with the cut and what is needed to accomplish the look. Study how the cut is framed, the angle of the cuts, and everything in between.

Make Clean Up a Snap

Choosing the right location to cut your hair is important and will affect how difficult clean up is. Cut hair can get everywhere, especially if you’re cutting smaller pieces. If possible, avoid cutting your hair on carpet. Instead, cut on tile or another hard floor. You could even cut it outside if the weather permits.  When you’re finished, sweep the hair up with a Swiffer dry cloth. Because of how they are made, the hair will be much easier to clean up than with a simple broom and dustpan.

Provide a Distraction for Kids

If you will be cutting kids hair at home, you will want to provide a distraction for them that keeps them busy. Having a child bouncing around bored while you’re trying to cut their hair is a surefire way to have a mistake. With a bouncing kid, you can have more severe mistakes than a miscut piece of hair. In other words, it is worth handing your kids a tablet or phone to play a game while you cut their hair.

Be Prepared for Mistakes

Because you are not trained to cut hair, you should prepare yourself that mistakes will be made. This is just something you’ll need to accept if you’re going to cut your hair at home. You may end up with a style different than what you were looking for, with cuts you didn’t intend to make or even with a length you weren’t aiming for. Whatever happens, breathe. Ultimately, it is hair. It will regrow.

You don’t have to go out and spend a lot of money on expensive hair products or pay someone else to cut your hair when you can do it yourself. It’s really not that difficult, but there are some tricks for making the process easier so you’re less likely to lose your mind while cutting your own locks at home.
